Tell Me The Old, Old Story

If words were invented to conceal thought, newspapers are a great improvement on a bad invention.
-       H.D. Thoreau, 1817-1862.

  The OPTIMIST and the PESSIMIST were arguing the virtues of their belief-systems and the way in which their two different approaches to life could possibly best benefit mankind.  But, as usual, the million-rouble question again came up:  Which approach is best ... OPTIMISM or PESSIMISM?

   PESSIMIST:   "Look at it this way:   Let's take the familiar glass-and-water analogy as a case in point.  I say the glass filled only halfway (50%) with water is half-empty.Things are always worse than they seem."

   OPTIMIST:  "Your argument is misleading.   I would prefer to describe such a glass as half-full. Anyway, if we were to take a smaller glass, say about half the size we are using now, and pour the contents of the old bigger glass into the new smaller one, people would notice that the glass is now 100% full. That's the problem with you pessimists ... you use containers that are too big (i.e. unfit for purpose) to begin with and then have the audacity to complain about the half-full glass."

   PESSIMIST: "Your argument is invalid.  I could, for the same price, argue that if we were to exchange the glass we are using now for a container twice its current size and pour the contents of the old glass over into the new, people would notice that the glass was only 25% full all the time.  That's the problem with you optimists:  You use the wrong containers (too big) to begin with to bluff the people and then have the audacity to claim the glass as (already) half-full."

   THE MILLION-ROUBLE QUESTION:  Which one of the two is correct?  Which one of the two possible approaches should we recommend?

   ANSWER:  Neither one of them is correct, for while the optimist and the pessimist were bickering over the glass-and-water, the REALIST had in the meantime arrived and had drunk all the water.

   REALIST:  "Stop wasting time bickering ... drink the freaking water before it all evaporates.  Don't procrastinate ... learn to do what you can with what you've got. before you lose it all!"

   On the one hand there are some hyper-optimists who will barge in where angels fear to tread (The Bible calls them 'fools'), renounce God and spit on the Bible.  They thrive on secular-humanist self-help books and meditate on their own august 'spirituality' while walking the 'labyrinth' for hours on end, playing with all kinds of coloured beads. They hire motivational speakers at exorbitant fees and listen to secular-humanist drivel invented by self-help psychologists and oriental yogis and gurus hailing all the way from India and Beverly Hills.
   They believe everything that the atheist-evolutionist-scientist tells them and scoff at God and the Bible, hoping that they will attain 'Nirvana' one day by ignoring the hard realities of life and sitting at the feet of some Tibetan mystic ... somewhere in a multi-million dollar mansion in Malibu.  These guys have no 'sins' and no 'guilt-complex', so they do not need a Messiah, or Salvation.  For them, concepts like 'good' and 'evil' are philosophical anachronisms as it doesn't really exist."There is no such thing as 'evil': Only thinking makes it so!"  These are the New Age champions of situational-ethics and moral-relativism, and usually end up in lucrative jobs where they become the watchdogs (sic)  over (i) public-broadcasting norms and standards (or the lack thereof), or (ii) educational curricula in the public school system.  Sheep in wolf-clothing.
   They (the skull-and-bones enthusiasts) approve grants for or donate money for 'Evolution-research' and support the 'Promote The Cradle Of Humankind Campaign' in Johannesburg, South Africa.   Some of them will even collect a host of unsanitary and ugly old fossils and protect it as if their lives depended on it. ... all in the name of the art, craft and science of 'palaeontology'. These hyper-optimists refuse to accept the downside of life, and often wear a sickeningly permanent, superficial smile on their countenance as plastic as toys from Hong Kong and as if life is one big Schuster-joke.
   To them Life poses no problems ... only 'challenges'.   This word has been so over-used by useless and corrupt politicians in South Africa that one of my 'challenges' is to get the politicians in my country to revert back to the word 'problems' ... maybe then they will get some of their projects done.  Africa is high on ideas and big on indabas (discussions) but low on implementation.

   PS. Fossils do not prove 'Evolution'.  It only proves that (i) living things are enclined to eventually die and perish and that (ii) there once was a worldwide deluge that destroyed the whole world, affectionately known as 'Noah's Flood'.  During the Wistar Symposium (USA) in 1966 some of the cream of the world's mathematicians have declared 'Evolution' mathematically unfeasible (i.e. scientifically improbable).  In theory the 'Evolutionary Theory' may look good on paper but the mathematics of it doesn't work out in practice.  (Someone has once said that, in theory, there should never be a difference between theory and practice, but , in practice, there often is).

  On the other hand, the hyper-pessimist will tell us that the world is going to the dogs, that there is no hope for mankind at all.  The pessimist-atheist will tell you that there is no God, and the materialist-evolutionists will tell you that we all have evolved from apes anyway and that there is no such a thing as 'right' or 'wrong' , or a commendable Universal Moral Code for mankind to live by: They insist ... "The Bible is myth, the Creation-story a fairy tale."
   Atheist-evolutionists will teach, preach and assert that humans will eventually die and get  recycled biologically back into Nature, that there is no such a thing as individual human personality and that when one dies, one will be dumped into a rubbish bin like an old, worn-out, obsolete and discarded computer hard-drive.  Hardened, unrepentant criminals will tell us that  there is no such a thing as a Hereafter, Divine Retribution by a Holy Creator or a Heaven and a Hell ... live it up while you can regardless of the consequences.  The eat-drink-and-be-merry crowd, easy to identify ... they are the ones who slip into the office late (in the morning) by the back door with a serious hangover, still 50% inebriated from the previous night's party.
   The REALIST will listen to these wisecracks with all their 'wise cracks' and know:  Jesus is alive and is coming back again, and, should I die today, I will hopefully forever be with the Lord.   The REALIST does not deny the condition of the world, or the hard facts of crime, war, natural disaster, racism, genocide, economic meltdown, inflation, unemployment, bankruptcy, disease, death, fraud, human-trafficking, drug-trafficking, alcoholism, drug-abuse, corruption, famine, poverty, suffering, the Holocaust, persecution, repression etc.   But the REALIST knows that these things cannot measure up to the glory that is God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, the Bible, the Gospel, forgiveness of sins, Salvation and Eternal friendship with that humble Carpenter from Nazareth who died on the cross of Calvary when we were not worth dying for ... to make us worth something to die for.
   Just keep telling me the Old, Old Story of Jesus and His love, and I am content.    There is no way in which the scourges of poverty, war and crime are ever going to successfully compete with prosperity (in the long run and in the full history of Creation).  It simply does not have the capital!  As that doyen of realist-optimists, Patience Strong, once remarked:  "Trouble, like bad weather, cannot last forever."
   The honest poor and destitute of this world (and the honest rich alike) wlll, if they believe and follow Christ (as C.S. Lewis says) as the Ecclesia of God still outlive this magnificent Universe.

Tell Me The Old, Old Story

(A.   Catherine Hankey, 1834-1911/William H. Doane, 1832-1913)

Tell me the old, old story
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,
Of Jesus and His love.
Tell me the story simply,
As to a little child,
For I am weak and weary,
And helpless and defiled.

Tell me the story slowly,
That I may take it in
That wonderful redemption,
God’s remedy for sin.
Tell me the story often,
For I forget so soon,
 The early dew of morning
Has passed away at noon.

Tell me the story softly,
With earnest tones and grave,
Remember I’m the sinner
Whom Jesus came to save.
Tell me the story always,
If you would really be,
In any time of trouble,
 A comforter to me.

Tell me the same old story,
When you have cause to fear
That this world’s empty glory
Is costing me too dear.
Yes, and when the world’s glory,
Is dawning on my soul,
Tell me the old, old story:
“Christ Jesus makes me whole.”

CHORUS
Tell me the old, old story,
Tell me the old, old story,
Tell me the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.

Nothing But The Blood

A soul is a troublesome  possession, and when man developed it he lost the Garden of Eden.
-       W. Somerset Maugham, 1874-1966.

   When we were not worthy to die for, Jesus of Nazareth died for us ... to make us worth dying for!  While other religions are still encouraging their adherents to earn their particular deities' or gods' favour by sheer hard work, transcendental meditation, ancestral worship, praying six times per day, memorising and reciting their holy scriptures or relying on an exemplary life and the individual virtue of personal merit and commendable 'spirituality', all we have as our claim to Salvation (by GRACE) is the blood and sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary.
   I have already, in 1993 if I'm not mistaken, given up trying to be 'perfectly holy' after decades of futile and laughable efforts to improve my 'spiritual and moral performance'.  My point of departure?  If I was (am) not sanctified by the blood of Christ, I'm not ever going to be sanctified enough for Heaven  ... period.  Our legal position in Christ is the that we have been sanctified by His sacrifice and death on the cross, and we are alive today because He had actually physically, literally, risen from the grave (Death, where is thy sting!). The just shall live by FAITH in the work, efforts and accomplishments of Christ ... not ours.
   By now the reader must surely have realised that I do not subscribe to a metaphorically-only risen-Christ (the way the 'Jesus Seminar' crowd would have it) but to a real, physically risen-Christ (the way the Bible would have it). So, let's leave the infantile philosophising about the deity of Christ and the silly counting out of little black, red, grey and orange beads for the 'Jesus Seminar' guys and their agnostic, and atheist-evolutionist  cronies.  Let their philosophers and 'seminary theologians' preach creatively and innovatively from Thomas Paine,  Stalin, Hitler, MarxVoltaire, Richard Dawkins, Dan Brown, Frank YerbyMao's Little Red Book, the Communist Manifesto, The Origin of the Species, obscure ancient Gnostic texts, the Apocrypha and the Government Gazette for all I care.   It's a free country, so let them preach and teach the anti-gospel (bad news) of the Theology-of-Tolerance, Secular Humanism and Universal Religious Syncretism: We have chosen to stick to the Rock of Ages and the BIBLE (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth).
   Obviously the injunction for Christians to live a holy life committed and dedicated to the cause of Christ remains valid, and obviously it should be every Christian believer's aim to crank up his or her moral condition onto a level par with his/her legal position (Justified ... 'Just-If-I-Had-Never-Sinned') in Christ.  That we'll do if time, strength and tenacity permit, for the simple reason that we have been called to edify the Church (the 'Ecclessia') and be of positive use to the Kingdom. But if (or rather when) we fail, for we are not hyper-faith supermen and superwomen, nothing but the BLOOD (the SACRIFICE of Christ as exemplified by the blood) remains to wash away our sin and make us whole again.  Jesus died for us because we could not save ourselves by lifting ourselves by our own spiritual bootstraps ... as our Creator (the Son of God) and the human offspring of Mary (the Son of Man) He had enormous respect for human frailty.
   A humble American pastor, Alvin Rogness, once wrote that, if we were important enough for God to have us weighed and considered as candidates for eternal damnation, we were also important enough for God to have us weighed and considered as candidates for God's GRACE. Do the math ... without a judge, judgment and absolute guilt before the law, no amnesty (GRACE) could be possible.  In a sound justice system, amnesty is generally offered only to those guilty before the law.  It's the very horror of the threat of the Great White Throne Judgment that, in the end, provides the saving legal substance in the Gospel of GRACE culminating from Christ's sacrifice on the cross.  Christ did not die to make God's Law obsolete, but to satisfy the demands of God's Law and release us from the curse of those harsh demands.

Nothing But The Blood

(Robert Lowry, 1826-1899)

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing, this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

CHORUS
Oh! Precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Unhappiness is not knowing what we want and killing ourselves to get it.
-       Don Herold, b.1889.

   I have often wondered:  What will the atheist-evolutionist do when he opens his eyes in Eternity and find that the Bible was authentic and the Gospel of Jesus Christ all the time was true … how will he then deal with his sin, and what will he do with his moral guilt before a holy God?  How will those arrogant atheist writers and cocky agnostic authors of atheist-agnostic literature from the thousands of libraries, bookshops and book-collections of individuals, withdraw all they had said in favour of atheism and against Heaven and against God?  What will they do in the eleventh hour when their Internet-profanity, -blasphemy and -vulgarity, so in vogue with many today, are broadcast to the world and to Heaven for everyone to see ... will they not in truth be fleeing in haste before the pursuing Angel of Retribution the way the Nazis tried to flee before the encroaching armies of the Allies during WWII, but to no avail?        Furthermore, will they not certainly be prosecuted and indicted in the Heavenly Courts exactly the way the Nazis were indicted and sentenced at Nuremberg… on the stark and uncompromising evidence of the very incriminating books, records, statistics and documents they themselves so painstakingly had kept with that well-known engineering precision for which they were so 'famous' from 1939 to 1945?
   The final question is asked of all of us:  How will we all escape if we neglect so great a salvation so brilliantly and lovingly engineered by Christ's Gospel of Grace?  The Bible says:

Hebrews 2:1  Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them.
Hebrews 2:2  For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;
Hebrews 2:3  how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard (www.e-sword.net, ASV).

  The door of God’s GRACE (God’s Redemption At Christ’s Expense) is still open for anyone to access the holy blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and for reconciliation with God.  Let us not deal with this magnanimous offer too lightly.

Are You Washed In The Blood?

(Elisha A. Hoffman, 1839-1929)

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing pow’r?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

When the Bridegroom cometh will your robes be white?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Will your soul be ready for the mansions bright
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb;
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean,
O be washed in the blood of the Lamb.

CHORUS
Are you washed (are you washed)
In the blood (in the blood)
In the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless?
Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Everyone is born a king, and most people die in exile.
-       Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900.

   One bright morning, while exiting from a bedroom in our apartment, I noticed (from the corner of my eye) a most hideous-looking insect sitting on the floor in the doorway.  It was black, about one inch (2.54 cm) long and appeared like some diabolical hybrid between a spider and a scorpion … a most ominous-looking little critter that made my blood run cold and my skin to crawl. I immediately turned toward our bedroom to fetch some semblance of a weapon (for self-defence) and also to get a few pages of newspaper to cover the insect while obliterating it, as I didn’t want to cause all kinds of unsavoury blood-spatter all over the place on the site of the slaughter that would make it difficult for us to clean afterwards, which sometimes can prove to be a more challenging ordeal than the threat of the living insect itself.
   Now please don’t get me wrong … I know that insects, like other living organisms, were created with tremendous cosmic purpose as part of an important  food-chain that checks the unbridled proliferation and spread of species in the wild to prevent all kinds of disorderly ‘urbanisation’ in Creation and ensure the proper balance of power in the natural Eco-system; I certainly am not from the old wives club that believes that flies, spiders, snakes, scorpions and hideous-looking insects like the one in my home were created by the Devil in a misguided and abortive effort to imitate the Grand Creator of all friendly, amiable and nice-looking living species, Jesus Christ. (As far as I am concerned, the Devil could not even create a cockroach with only one brain-cell even if his life depended on it, unless we propose to employ the word ‘create’ poetically, for certainly the Devil can ‘create’ [wreak] havoc wherever he goes).  The only reasons I still spell the name of this master-fiend with a capital ‘D’ are threefold, i.e.:

-       In South Africa we still adhere to the rule that proper nouns are to be spelt with a capital letter
-       The vogue among some Christians to spell the name of our chief enemy with a lower case ‘d’ for Devil (or ‘s’ for Satan, as the case may be)  is, in my pathetic little democratic opinion, an infantile psychological cop-out and totally unnecessary.
-         At the cross of Calvary Jesus did not conquer a Mickey Mouse adversary, but a daunting enemy of formidable status and capacity; I thus refuse to play down His magnificent achievement by the employment of a lower case ‘d’ or 's' in my text.

  Now the reader may wonder whether the intruder were not actually totally harmless, as it was sitting so inert and completely quiet and still, but rest assured, when a thing like that is sitting still, it is not contemplating its cousin's birthday or calculating the odds of winning the local lottery; it probably is developing an intricate blueprint for some sinister manoeuvre with which it can later, when it's dark, approach its human patron without getting zapped too soon in the process.  After all, experts do not tell us for nothing that one is always within at least two metres from a spider and that one will, in the average lifetime, swallow at least twelve spiders live whilst sleeping.
   So, I was taking no chances, and I thus proceeded to cover my hapless adversary with a few pages of a folded newspaper and, with the aid of an old, obsolete but severely modified hairbrush, entered the combat-zone with the zeal and energy of a medieval knight on steroids, with arms flailing and wielding my lethal weapon with deadly, terrible effect.  The poor chap simply had had no chance … not even a real giant spider-zilla would have survived such a brutal onslaught and live to tell the tale.  I was amazed at my Viking-like prowess, probably some throwback to my formidable (mixed) Dutch, German and French ancestry.  Those blows that fell on the macabre object of my wrath were delivered with the tenacity of an ancient Dutch seafarer, the engineering precision of a German auto-manufacturer and the unbridled zeal of an amorous French suitor.
   Now, as I was a little hesitant to lift the newspaper to inspect the damage I had inflicted, my wife was the first to lift the paper from the floor: “What have you got here?  What’s this newspaper doing in the middle of the floor?”  And there it was … a simple plastic toy that had fallen from some grandchild’s lucky dip or something.  It was an ordinary plastic ant, as harmless as a rubber duck under heavy anaesthesia.
   In retrospect, I had made the embarrassing mistake of:

-       not identifying the object correctly and mistaking a harmless toy for a lethal, venomous insect
-       taking my eyes off the issues that really mattered and expending precious time and energy on fighting and demolishing an already dead, harmless adversary
-       Taking my eyes of Jesus and focusing on an imaginary threat of extremely small, if not zero, significance.

        The Bible says:

Hebrews_12:2  looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (ASV, www.e-sword.net).

   In the midst of wars, crime, pestilence, economic hardship, natural disasters and terrible catastrophes coming over the planet, the only message of hope that still carries weight is the one that reads:  Turn tour eyes upon Jesus; Look full into His wonderful face; And the things of earth, will grow strangely dim … in the light of His glory and grace!

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

(Helen H. Lemmel, 1864-1961)

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!

  Thru death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more  hath dominion ‒
For more than conq’rors we are!

His word shall not fail you He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well;
Then go to the world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

CHORUS
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
