WAR:
I gave my life for freedom, this I know;
For
those who bade me fight had told me so.
- W.N. Ewer, b.1885.
“Ah, sweet mystery of life, at last I found
thee!” the song of the enamoured lover goes.
LIFE remains a mystery, in spite of all the romantic ballads of starry-eyed lovers and
the classical wisdom of many, many sages.
For instance:
- how could it happen
that a man wins R10 million (about $1 million) in a national lottery and two
years later is arrested, flat-broke and destitute, for stealing R250 (about $25) from a neighbour's home?
- how could it be
possible for a woman to own over 500 pairs of shoes (as one Hollywood actress
recently boasted)? Bear in mind that over 500 pairs of shoes are over 1000
shoes … how many feet does she have?
- how could it happen where
a burglar breaks into a house only to be surprised and shot dead by another
burglar who had arrived at the same house a little earlier? Was it poetic
justice?
King
Solomon once wrote these words:
There is an evil which I have seen under the
sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler: folly is set in great
dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
I have seen servants upon horses, and
princes walking like servants upon the earth. (Ecclesiastes 10:5-10:7 ASV).
All we
know is that, farther along, we’ll know all about it. Farther along, we’ll understand why. (Please refer to The Weaver, previous post on this blog).
(Rev.
W.B. Stevens)
Tempted
and tried we’re oft made to wonder
Why
it should be thus all the day long,
While
there are others living about us,
Never
molested, tho’ in the wrong.
When
death has come and taken our loved ones,
It
leaves our home so lonely and drear;
Then
do we wonder why others prosper,
Living
so wicked year after year.
Faithful
till death, said our loving Master,
A
few more days to labor and wait;
Toils
of the road will then seem as nothing,
As
we sweep thru the beautiful gate.
When
we see Jesus coming in glory,
When
He comes from His home in the sky,
Then
we shall meet Him in that bright mansion,
We’ll
understand it all by and by.
CHORUS
Farther
along we’ll know all about it,
Farther
along we’ll understand why;
Cheer
up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We’ll
understand it all by and by.
